The Latest on Georgia's Medical Marijuana Program

Last week, the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission met and approved rules for testing, inspections, and distribution of medical marijuana. This week, they took a step back and re-examined those rules.

Due to technicalities, the sale of medical marijuana will be pushed back a bit further. When the rules for the program were filed last week, a notice was not sent out to the Office of Legislative Counsel, which is required by the law.

The state wants to make sure the program is launched correctly the first time, so they have chosen to rescind the rules and re-publish them with corrections.

Medical marijuana rules must also be updated to correct any errors made by the scribe. The new rules will also take recent laboratory feedback into consideration and will be published on Monday with updates and changes.

Prior to this setback, low THC dispensaries could have opened their doors as soon as March or April of 2023. However, there is no word on when distribution will begin. We aren’t sure how much of a delay this setback will cause.

All states with medical marijuana programs experience setbacks like these, even if they are mere formalities. Not to worry, it should not be too much longer! Soon, you will be able to apply for your very own medical marijuana card in Georgia!
