Marijuana and Depression

Marijuana has been gaining popularity for many years now as more states legalize it for medical purposes as well as recreational. Most people are aware that THC is psychoactive and has the power to change the way we feel.

One thing many people want to know is whether cannabis can help with mood disorders like depression or anxiety. It’s true, cannabis can change how we feel, but how? The truth is, it really depends on the person as well as many other factors such as:

  • How much/when/what you last ate

  • Gender

  • Weight

  • Age

  • Dosage

  • Delivery method

  • Strain

…and more! All of these things can affect the way cannabis makes you feel, and there is no way to predict how it is going to make you feel ahead of time.

Can Marijuana Help Depressive Symptoms?

There is no straight answer to this question. As we previously mentioned, it depends on many things. For some, cannabis can help them feel more energized and focused while assisting with their mood.

For others, cannabis can make the depressive symptoms worse. Strain can make a big difference here. Typically, sativa dominant strains are more energizing while indica dominant tend to make people feel sleepy.

Indica is great if you are trying to fall asleep and get adequate rest but may not be good for people with depression, especially during the day.

So, whether marijuana can help people with depression depends. Although depression probably will not be considered a qualifying condition in Georgia, people with qualifying conditions may also have depression.

These people can kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. If you find that cannabis does not help your depressive symptoms, you can try a marijuana cream or tincture instead for your qualifying condition and see how that works for you.
